As protests mount against austerity measures, the New York Times claims some of the officers who led the overthrow of the dictatorship are making their voices heard again, even warning the debt crisis could trigger the kind of revolutionary turmoil they spearheaded in 1974.

A new republic

On the afternoon of 5 October 1910, José Relvas, speaking on behalf of the leadership of the Portuguese Republican Party proclaimed the establishment of the republic from the balcony of Lisbon City Chambers. On 6 October the republic was proclaimed in Oporto, and the rest of the country over the following days.
