Proclamation of the Republic

José Relvas proclaims the republic from Lisbon City Chambers

On the afternoon of 5 October 1910, José Relvas, speaking on behalf of the leadership of the Portuguese Republican Party proclaimed the establishment of the republic from the balcony of Lisbon City Chambers. On 6 October the republic was proclaimed in Oporto, and the rest of the country over the following days.

"Today, 5 October 1910, at 11am in the great hall in Lisbon City Chambers Portugal was proclaimed a republic following the conclusion of the national revolutionary movement. A provisional government has been formed under the presidency of Teófilo Braga."
